Destitution

(from the book Spirit, Rhythms, Words)

she never has learned to trust
existing only to satisfy lust
fate had already played it’s hand
always in the clutches of an abusive man
for her love has never been right
no longer is it worth the fight
pain and disdain
it’s all one and the same
this she feels towards everyone
all the hopes and dreams she ever spoke of
were either stolen or arrived broken
the childhood that won’t go away
only ego’s, libido’s, and lonely hearts appear
unanswered prayers tearing her apart
will another loving heart ever come near?
she arrives on the strip again and again
those dangerous inclinations of her evil twin
this, the only place where she thrives
fast money, faceless love, recurring nightmares
from out of nowhere another shadow appears
willing to pay for play in the alley way
the fee is tendered
her services rendered
now while watching him walk away
her emptiness inside must still be assuaged

  3. Wanted to say too Rory, even though these women often feel bad about what they do, they are a very needed part of society. Some men, through physical or mental impariment, can never have a closeness with a woman in any orher way. In that way, these women have great compassion and understanding.

  5. Thanks @Cinnamon. One of the many ways I imagine it must be in that life.

  6. Thanks @Frankie. You make an excellent point, some men would not know intimacy nor feel a hint of closeness were it not for the woman of the night. One certainly should not be judgmental.

  7. Hi @Katherine, Indeed it does work both ways and the people living this lifestyle landed there for the same reasons.

  8. It's sad how life can desensitize us to where we are no longer living but merely existing, an insightful look into this woman's plight

  10. Hey Sis. Yes, there are several factors which contributes to a woman finding herself in that circumstance. In most cases we should look on them with compassion I think.

  15. Rory,
Captured well, the emptiness that will never be found on the streets. Excellent!

  16. I like how you touched on how her childhood played a part in it. I am sure a lot of the emptiness inside prostitutes are trying to fill is from an abusive or neglectful childhood. This was well said yet sad. Well written.
